SAN ANTONIO – A Thursday night district rivalry at Alamo Stadium is exactly what each team needed to get cling onto the edge of the playoff hunt.

The problem, only one could come out on top in hopes to hold onto their season.

Sam Houston (2-3) began the night off hot, jumping out to a quick 21-0 lead in the second quarter.

Fortunately, for the Bears (1-5), they had one surge in them before the break.

With 2:18 left in the half, quarterback Brian Mattison took off on third down, finding the end zone.

But any time for the Hurricanes was almost too much time, as they drove down the field and found themselves in the red zone with under 20 seconds remaining. Instead of capitalizing, though, they ran out of time and each team went into the break with the score stuck at 21-7.

The second half showed what both teams were capable of on defense, with multiple punts, turnovers and almost 19 minutes of scoreless football.

The good outing gave Edison the perfect opportunities to score, but it just couldn’t do it the first time, or the second time.

Then, with about six minutes left, the Golden Bears found themselves on the opponent side of the field and threatening to make it a one-score game.

Edison quarterback Brian Mattison heaved a pass deep into the corner to Jamont McClain, where it was bobbled by both he and the defensive back. When the dust settled, though, Hurricane defensive back John Ross found the ball in his hands.

The Hurricanes put the nail in the coffin with a 70-yard Brandon Adams touchdown run to make it 28-7 in the last four minutes of the game.
