Death Toll From West Nile Virus in Greece Rises to 34


The number of people who died due to the West Nile Virus (WNV) outbreak in Greece is now 34, according to the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention‘s (KEELPNO) latest announcement.
The deaths recorded this year are seven times higher than last year’s fatal incidents, as the outbreak started as early as May, due to the weather conditions in Greece.
25 more people are still hospitalized with 15 of them in a critical condition.
The virus mainly affects the elderly. Each of the 34 people who lost their lives this year were older than 69 years od age.
A total of 289 cases have been recorded so far, with 50 of them being in West Attica region.
