A member of the public called police after a suspicious rock with wires coming out of it was found on a Torbay beach.

Police closed off a Hollicombe beach and seafront gardens - between Torquay and Paignton - after the discovery of what appeared to be an explosive devic.

The closure at Hollicombe happened at around 11am on Friday October 5 after the discovery of what appeared to be a possible hazard by a passer-by.

A police spokesman said: “Officers and colleagues from the Explosive Ordnance Department attended the scene where a local cordon was put in place while the unknown device was detonated.”

And in a separate incident a bomb disposal squad were called to a popular Devon beach today, Monday October 8, after a man reported finding a potentially explosive device.

Police were initially called to Saunton beach at 10.30am following reports of a possibly explosive device that was located by a member of the public.

It is believed the man had removed the device from the beach to prevent anyone from touching it.

Officers attended and took a picture of the device which was sent to the Royal Navy's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "The EOD team attended the scene and collected the device.

"Due to the number of people on the beach, the EOD team took the device away to be disposed of."

The police say the beach was at no point cordoned off and neither were any beachgoers evacuated.

This is the second explosives incident at Saunton beach in two days.
