After 23 deaths, HP issues advisory against scrub typhus, dengue

SHIMLA: After witnessing 23 deaths caused by scrub typhus and dengue in Himachal Pradesh this year, the health and family welfare department has issued an advisory to all chief medical officers, medical superintendents, medical colleges and hospitals to ensure availability of medicines and spread awareness regarding the diseases.
While dengue has claimed four lives, scrub typhus has killed 19 people across the state.

In the advisory for scrub typhus, the director, health services, have asked the authorities concerned to ensure availability of doxycycline and azythromycine at all health institutions. It has been suggested that representatives from the health department should attend meetings of Panchayati Raj institutions at the district, block and village level to sensitize the community about scrub typhus.
As many as 1,337 out of 10,384 samples had been tested positive for scrub typhus till October 5. Of the total 19 deaths reported from the state, 12 happened in Shimla district; two each in Chamba and Kangra districts; and one each in Bilaspur, Kullu and Sirmaur districts.

In the advisory issued for dengue, the authorities have been asked to have disease control and reporting and communication mechanism in place right from sub-centres to the district level.
In the state, as many as 3575 out of 12,366 samples have been tested positive for dengue. Of the total four dengue deaths reported in the state, one death each has been reported from Mandi, Kangra, Solan and Sirmaur districts.
