India Felstead-Patterson has turned one

Binky Felstead took to Instagram in October 2018 to reveal her adorable daughter India had come down with hand, foot and mouth disease.

Writing to her 1.4m Instagram followers, the former Made In Chelsea star said: “I’ve had to cancel meetings and get to the doctor, the pharmacy AND the emergency vet today because India’s down with foot and mouth.”

Binky – who gave birth to her and Josh 'JP' Patterson’s daughter in June 2017 – was met by hundreds of supportive message from concerned followers after the news.

But what exactly is the disease? Here’s all you need to know:

What is hand, foot and mouth disease?

According to the NHS, hand, foot and mouth disease is a common childhood illness that can also affect adults.

The affects of the disease usually subside on their own in seven to ten days.

Symptoms

India's parents Binky and JP split earlier this year

The NHS list a few factors that can be the first signs of the disease.

A sore throat, a high temperature above 38 degrees, and not wanting to eat are all listed as first signs of the illness.

As the disease progresses, ulcers and rashes often break out on the affected person.

Treatment

Binky gave birth with JP by her side in June 2017

According to NHS, antibiotics and medicines don’t help the disease as it has to run its course.

There are a few things affected people can do to help with the symptoms, though.

Drinking plenty of fluids is advised, but it’s important to avoid acidic drinks like fruit juices.

Eating soft foods like soup is recommended – the NHS say spicy foods should be avoided, however.

Preventing the spread of hand, foot and mouth disease

There are several easy steps the NHS recommend people follow to avoid spreading the disease.

These include: washing your hands regularly, using tissues to capture germs, bin used tissues as quickly as possible, not sharing household items, and washing soiled bedding in a hot wash.
