Dengue fever
The most current information of the dengue situation in Thailand shows that since the beginning of the year through Oct. 15, a total of 66,372 cases were reported from 77 provinces, including 84 deaths.
Nakornpathom, Phichit, Nakornsawan, Nakornnayok and Chiengrai have reported the highest morbidity rates.
Rabies
The Disease Control Department reported this week on the 17th human rabies death of the year in a 65-year-old man from Songkhla.
The man was bitten by a dog on his left wrist in January but his relatives could not tell where the incident happened. The man also took care of some 80 stray dogs at home.
The 17 human rabies fatalities were reported from the following provinces: Two each died in Buri Ram, Rayong and Songkhla and one each in Surin, Trang, Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phatthalung, Nong Khai, Yasothon, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Tak and Surat Thani.
Measles
In a follow-up on the measles outbreak in Yala province, media reports are saying the increase in measles in the southern province is in part due to “vaccine denial”.
The main cause of the mass outbreak of measles in the far South is the large number of Muslims who are refusing to take the vaccine, said Vaccine Preventable Diseases Division director Dr Pornsak Yoocharoen.
They have been incorrectly taught that these vaccines are haram, forbidden for Muslims to use or consume.
Through Oct. 15, Thailand health officials have reported a total of 2495 cases from 73 provinces, including five deaths.
The morbidity rate in Yala is 65.82 / 100,000 population.
