NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk police officer died last week after two months of fighting an unknown illness that made it severely difficult to breathe.

10 On Your Side first told you last month how Officer Seth Amos started having trouble breathing. It led to many trips to the hospital and an emergency procedure, but Amos passed away Friday.

The Amos family will tell you this about their son, that he was a chip off the old block.

That he had respect for people, and did the right thing in the right way at the right time. That he was known as the moral compass of his platoon, and that he had no fear of dying with his unwavering faith.

“We are standing on holy ground, and I know that there are angels all around,” sings Anne Marie Amos.  Seth Amos’ mother will tell you her son was blessed with a big family with deep faith in Jesus Christ.

“He had no more fight in him. He had given everything and he was ready to go,” said Seth’s father, Retired Norfolk Master Police Officer Chris Amos.

Seth married his high school sweetheart Stacey and they had two children, and in the end Seth was not afraid. “He wasn’t afraid. He had made peace, and he’s at peace with the lord now, and then he went,” Chris said.

Seth fought the good fight for two months against a mysterious illness that led to acute respiratory failure, hemorrhaging in his lungs and a breakdown of his organs, but in the end his death will help others.

“You know if they could help one more family by what they learn from Seth, and they did say they learned a lot from him as they worked on him while learning new things every day,” Chris said.

Dad remembers his last conversation with Seth, “I said Seth, I don’t know what’s happening, but I know God is up to something and it’s bigger than you, and bigger than our family.”

Mom remembers the pain Seth, who was only 30 years old, was suffering.  Anne Marie said Seth told her, “It just keeps hurting every breath I take. It was like he was having holes poked in him every breath.”

Seth had deep faith in Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the LORD with all with all your heart.  Lean not on your own understanding.”

That is word on the back of Seth T-shirts, and they also have Seth Strong wristbands, and they read
“GODS’ will for GODS’ glory.”

In the end, Seth Amos with his strong faith was standing on holy ground. His mother singing in her living room as she remembered her son, “Let us praise Jesus, now we are standing, in his presence, on holy ground.”

They sang that after Seth was taken off life support and was slipping away. A doctor came over and told Chris Amos he’s never seen such a spiritual moment as that.

There is a GoFundMe set up to help Seth’s wife and two children.
