According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Sofina Foods Inc. Oct. 26 recalled Janes brand Pub Style Chicken Burgers from the national marketplace due to reports of Salmonella contamination.

CFIA also reports that 25 cases of illness in nine provinces are linked to this outbreak: British Columbia (one), Alberta (three), Saskatchewan (three), Manitoba (one), Ontario (12), Quebec (two), New Brunswick (one), Prince Edward Island (one), and Newfoundland and Labrador (one). Two individuals have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

“Frozen raw breaded chicken products have been identified as a source of this outbreak,” CFIA stated.

Consumers should not consume the recalled product described below.

Check to see if you have recalled products in your home. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.

“Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.

“Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis,” CFIA advised.

“If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor.”

The recall was triggered by findings by the CFIA during its investigation into a food-borne illness outbreak. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.

If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA said it will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings.

The CFIA is also verifying that industry is removing recalled product from the marketplace.
