Chandigarh, November 1
The Department of Paediatrics, Advanced Paediatrics Centre, PGI, will host the 6th Kawasaki disease summit and the first annual conference of the Kawasaki Disease Society of India from November 3 to 4.
Kawasaki disease (KD) is a common vasculitic disorder in young children.
The condition was first identified by a Japanese paediatrician, Dr Tomisaku Kawasaki, in 1961. Incidentally, Dr Kawasaki had visited the PGI in October 2005 to deliver an oration.
About 50-60 cases of KD are diagnosed at the Advanced Paediatrics Centre every year.
Delay in diagnosis and treatment of the disease can result in serious sequelae involving the heart. These sequelae can have disastrous long-term consequences for the child.
KD is now being identified at several centres in the country. Experts from these centres would be participating in the event. — TNS
