Harrisburg School District confirms 2 cases of meningitis, says it’s not an outbreak

The Harrisburg School District said in a Facebook post that two employees at the John Harris campus are reported to have viral meningitis, but it is not a school-wide outbreak.

“Social media posts about adults and/or students being quarantined or put in isolation at John Harris Campus are NOT true,” the post states.

The district said it is taking precautions and affected classrooms are being sanitized Monday.

“The District’s Lead School Nurse spoke in depth with the Pennsylvania Department of Health concerning this matter,” the statement said. “DOH recommended that we all treat this incident like any other virus.”

The district went on to say the DOH recommends good hand washing habits and covering coughs as the cold and flu season is here.

The DOH did not say any other measures needed to be taken, and said that it is not a reportable disease, the district said.

Aseptic Meningitis is a viral infection of the meninges, which is a system of membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, according to the DOH. It is common, but the DOH said almost all cases occur as an isolated event, so outbreaks are rare.

Symptoms occur within one week of exposure and can include fever, headache, stiff neck and fatigue, the DOH said. Rash, sore throat and intestinal symptoms may also occur.

The DOH said some of the causes of AM could be contagious person to person, while others are not, but most infections are passed through stool. People with AM should wash their hands thoroughly after using the bathroom, but isolation is not necessary.

There are no specific medicines used to treat AM, the DOH said.
