Alabama health officials have confirmed the first case of AFM (Acute Flaccid Myelitis) in the state.

The rare disease manifests itself much like polio, affecting the central nervous system, causing weakening of the muscles.

Doctors say the chances of contracting the disease are about one in a million. Viruses and environmental toxins are among a variety of possible causes, the CDC says.

According to the Virginia Department of Health:

AFM is not spread from person to person. The viruses that are believed to cause AFM may be contagious from one person to another or may be spread by a mosquito or other vector depending on which virus causes the AFM. While the cause of the disease remains unknown, doctors say some treatment could help.

The Alabama State Department Of Health tells ABC 33/40 they are currently looking into four more cases that are unconfirmed at this time.

To protect the privacy of patients the health department says they will not provide the location where the cases are discovered but they want people statewide to be aware of it.
