An Appleton high school student has been diagnosed with tuberculosis.

The Xavier High School student is currently receiving medical care and will remain in isolation until no longer infectious.

According to the Appleton Department of Public Health, approximately 40 to 50 new cases of TB are diagnosed in Wisconsin every year.

Students close to the affected individual will be offered free TB testing and treatment if necessary, but public health officials say the general public is not at risk.

The school released a formal letter addressed to parents on their website.
