The ongoing salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey has already made 164 people sick in the United States. That’s according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Right now, local doctors like Dr. Daliah Wachs are reminding families to practice food handling safety when preparing Thanksgiving Turkeys.

“The only way to protect yourself is to make sure you cook your food thoroughly and make sure you don't let any of the food you are about to eat touch anything raw,” Dr. Wachs said.

She says the people most vulnerable are infants, elderly and people with weak immune systems.

Kathy Horgan and Laura Reeves can't wait for the holiday,

“Cranberry, apple stuffing all by hand,” Horgan said.

“I have someone else making turkey and I make ham with potatoes, dressing,” Reeves said.

They aren't too concerned about the outbreak and neither is Brittany Gledhill.

“I love Thanksgiving and turkey is part of it, you have to have turkey,” Gledhill said.

Below are a few food safety tips:

  1. Wash hands with warm water and soap
  2. Never cross-contaminate food
  3. After handling raw meat wash all cutting boards with hot water and soap and wipe counters
  4. Cook food thoroughly
  5. Store food properly
