551 cases of dengue reported in Capital this month

New Delhi: With 551 fresh cases reported so far this month, the total number of people diagnosed with dengue this season has reached 5,623, according to the latest report by South Delhi Municipal Corporations (SDMC). The number of dengue cases reported throughout last year, till November, was 8,549.

The report added that three new cases of malaria have been reported this month, taking the total number of cases of the vector-borne disease to 870 this year.

The number of Chikungunya cases, meanwhile, stands at 375, with no new cases reported this month.

A senior municipal corporation official said that efforts are being taken to contain vector-borne diseases, which have yielded a positive result.

Municipal dengue breeding checkers found mosquito breeding in as many as 2,27,818 households during inspection and served 1,81,970 legal notices for creating a conducive atmosphere for breeding in their houses or premises.

According to the data of all three corporations, the number of cases of breeding reported in each civic body stands at 71,552 in North Delhi Municipal Corporation, 94,208 in SDMC and 62,058 in East Delhi Municipal Corporation

The three civic bodies also initiated 25,731 prosecutions against premises where breeding was found, the report said.

According to municipal health officials, most of the breeding was detected from waste products left in the open.

Noticing the rise in cases of vector-borne diseases, all three civic bodies had issued an advisory on control and prevention of breeding at the source, and made it clear that taking precaution is the only effective tool to prevent contracting these diseases.

Dengue and chikungunya are caused by the bite of Aedes agypti mosquito, which breeds in clear water, while the female Anopheles mosquito, which causes malaria, can breed in both fresh and muddy water.
