SAGINAW, MI -- The Saginaw County Animal Care Center will be closed for the remainder of the week while crews do a deep clean after reported cases of parvo at the shelter.

The shelter had three cases of parvo within the past two weeks, according to Saginaw County Controller Robert Belleman.

"They are deep cleaning and they want to prevent any cross-contamination," Belleman said.

The shelter will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 20 and Wednesday, Nov. 21. It will be closed for the holiday on Thanksgiving and Friday, Nov. 23.

Crews will reevaluate and potentially reopen on Monday, Nov. 26, Belleman said.

Parvovirus, or parvo, mainly affects dogs and is highly contagious and potentially fatal. It is spread from dog to dog from direct or indirect contact with their feces.

Symptoms of canine parvovirus in dogs include lethargy, vomiting, fever and diarrhea.

Though the virus may infect other mammals, the canine form of parvovirus cannot be spread to humans.
