An investigation by BBC One's Watchdog carried out in leading pub chains discovered samples from drinks were contaminated

Bacteria were said to have been found at JD Wetherspoon, Slug and Lettuce, Harvester, Hungry Horse and Marston’s Two For One.

Undercover reporters for Watchdog on BBC1 tonight took the samples last month.

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health said it may be a health risk and “is a concern”.

Slug & Lettuce “immediately investigated”, Hungry Horse said it has undergone a deep clean and staff at Two for One were said to be undergoing retraining.

Wetherspoon said it had “taken on board the finding of the report” but Harvester disputed Watchdog's scientific method.

Last year some of the UK's most popular coffee chains have been found to have traces of POO in some of their drinks.

An investigation by BBC One's Watchdog carried out in Costa and Caffe Nero discovered samples from iced drinks were contaminated with bacteria.

Costa said: "We were disappointed with the findings, especially as these stores are all rated 'very good' with the top hygiene rating of five.

A spokesman for Caffe Nero described the findings as concerning and added: "A thorough investigation is now under way and the appropriate action will be taken."
"99 per cent of our stores are rated as very good, good or satisfactory by their local EHO (environmental health officer) - making us one of the most highly rated businesses on the high street," he said.
