More than 90,000 pounds of ground turkey products have been recalled by Jennie-O Turkey Store in Barron for the concern that they may be associated with a salmonella outbreak, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The recall, issued Thursday, Nov. 15, only concerns the following products:
• One-pound packages of “Jennie-O GROUND TURKEY 93% LEAN | 7% FAT” with use-by dates of Oct. 1 and Oct. 2, 2018.
• One-pound packages of “Jennie-O TACO SEASONED GROUND TURKEY” with a use-by date of Oct. 2, 2018.
• One-pound packages of “Jennie-O GROUND TURKEY 85% LEAN | 15% FAT” with a use-by date of Oct. 2, 2018.
• One-pound packages of “Jennie-O ITALIAN SEASONED GROUND TURKEY” with a use-by date of Oct. 2, 2018.
The products subject to recall bear establishment number “P-190” inside the USDA mark of inspection. They were produced on Sept. 11. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.
There may be some of these products in freezers and the USDA’s FSIS urges people not to consume them. The products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
The USDA classified the notices as a “Class I” recall, where there is a reasonable probability that using the product will cause serious, adverse health affects, or death. It listed the health risk as “high.”
In total, around 91,388 pounds of the product are being recalled.
Other turkey products, such as deli meats or whole, raw turkeys, are not subject to this recall. But the USDA reminds consumers to properly handle and throughly cook raw turkey before consuming it.
Various public health agencies have been investigating a salmonella outbreak that has affected 164 people in 135 states. But the USDA said those patients have reported using other brands and types of raw turkey products from many different stores or having worked with live turkeys, as well.
Consumers with questions regarding the recall can contact Jennie-O Consumer Engagement Team at 800-621-3505, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Central Time, Monday through Friday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Central Time, Saturday and Sunday.
