Panaji: Over 50 percent increase in drunk-driving cases

Panaji, Nov 27 (TOI): The Goa Police, which has intensified its drive against traffic violators, has logged an increase of over 50% in cases of drunkdriving this year. As per official statistics, the traffic cell has booked 4,920 such cases till date, a 56% jump when compared to the 2,760 cases it registered during the same period in 2017.

The force had recently procured 100 alcometers to boost its efforts against drunk-driving. The devices, which were subsequently distributed among branches of the traffic cell for immediate implementation, have helped the police detect and book thousands of inebriated motorists. Sources in the department said cases of those booked for drunk-driving have been referred to court, with some even resulting in convictions.

The introduction of four laser speed radar guns in March this year has also helped the police log 15,400 instances of overspeeding. Last year, just one such case was registered. Laser speed radar guns are capable of catching speeding vehicles 300 metres before they reach the equipment, by which time photo and video evidence are already collected.

Several individuals using cellphones while riding/driving, have also been brought to book, too. As many as 3,490 cases have been registered so far this year, a 55% increase from last year’s 1,944. Instances of dangerous driving have also risen by 36% when compared to the 1,944 cases registered in 2017.

The police have also come down hard on individuals riding triple seat and those using vehicles with tinted glasses. They have registered 9,650 and 29,386 cases respectively till date.

Director general of police Muktesh Chander told TOI that continuous checks not only help weed out violators but also dissuade other motorists from flouting traffic rules.
