The Malaysia Ministry of Health is reporting an additional human rabies case in Sarawak, Malaysia. This is the 14th case reported in the state since the end of June 2017.
The patient is a 21-year-old man living in Batu 7, Kuching, Sarawak. He was bitten by an unknown dog on Oct. 4. After the bite, he did not wash the wound or seek medical treatment.
On November 21, 2018, the patient was ill at the back of his body and complained of falling a day earlier. He did not say that he had been bitten by a dog. On November 24, 2018, the patient has been hospitalized at the Sarawak General Hospital (HUS) when suffering from both legs. The patient was admitted to the ward and the examination found that he had symptoms of hydrophobia, aerophobia and confusion.
The case was rabies confirmed through testing clinical samples.
The patient is currently undergoing treatment and in the observation of the HUS clinical experts.
Since the beginning of the outbreak, 12 of the cases died, one survived with neurologic complications and the latest case is still under treatment.
