The Longview School District canceled Tuesday night’s Mark Morris boys basketball game at Skyview and home wrestling match against Columbia River after a second case of whooping cough was confirmed on the boy’s basketball team.
The contests were canceled to “minimize any chance of more student athletes becoming ill,” according to a district news release.
District spokesman Rick Parrish said the school explained the situation to Skyview and Columbia River officials, and the three schools decided to cancel the games as a precautionary measure. The schools plan to reschedule the contests later in the season, Parrish said.
Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease that is spread through the air. It causes cold-like symptoms and violent, uncontrollable coughing.
The district has identified four confirmed cases of whooping cough: two at Mark Morris, one at Cascade Middle School and one at Monticello Middle School. The district notified parents from each of those schools, and it is currently working with the county health department to monitor the situation, Parrish said.
