FDA labels eight brands of dog food 'potentially toxic' over vitamin D levels

The FDA released a statement Monday alerting owners that they have identified dozens of products sold by eight different pet food brands that contain "potentially toxic" levels of vitamin D.

The organization began testing samples of dog food after getting complaints from owners that their dogs were suffering vitamin D toxicity, which can cause kidney failure and death. So far, the FDA has only identified this problem in dog food, not food made for any other pets.

Earlier this year ABC7 had identified, after a months-long investigation, fatal amounts of an animal euthanasia drug in a pet food brand called Gravy Train.

Dog that ingest elevated levels of Vitamin D could have symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss.
