WEBVTT REPORTER THE NUMBERS ARE ASTRONOMICALLY HIGH. BUTLER COUNTY USUALLY HANDLES ONE CASE PER YEAR AND OFTEN NOT AT ALL. 245 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN INFECTED WITH HEPATITIS B A AND THE NUMBERS ARE GOING UP EVERY WEEK. NINE OUT OF 10 CASES ARE OUT OF DRUG USERS. THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT SAYS THIS GOES ALL THE WAY DOWN TO MARIJUANA USERS. 60% OF THE PEOPLE INFECTED END UP HOSPITALIZED. YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF BY GETTING THE HEPATITIS-A VACCINE. THIS IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED FOR ANYONE IN A HIGH RISK GROUP, SUCH AS AN I.V. DRUG USE BUT PEOPLE WHO WORK IN THE FOOD SERVICE INDUSTRY ARE ALSO STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO GET VACCINATED IF YOU THINK YOU’VE COME IN CONTACT WITH SOMEONE WHO HAS HEPATITIS-A, YOU SHOULD GET THE VACCINE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, BUT DEFINITELY WITHIN TEN DAYS. Hundreds of people in Greater Cincinnati are contracting hepatitis A.Butler County has the highest number of cases both in our area and in the state of Ohio.The county normally handles one case per year, if any at all. In the past five months, though, 245 people in the county have been infected. Nine out of 10 cases are among drug users, and not just people sharing needles. Health departments say marijuana users are being affected, too.Sixty percent of the people infected end up hospitalized, health officials say.So how do you protect yourself?Health officials recommend getting the hepatitis A vaccine.
