In a follow-up on the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) situation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Health (MOH) reports  a second case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) for the month of December.

The patient is a 45-year-old man from Sajir, who is hospitalized with the infection. He had camel contact, a known risk factor for MERS transmission.

Earlier this week, a case was reported from the city of Najran.

The new case raises the global total since the virus was first detected in humans in 2012 to 2,277, at least 806 of them fatal.
