The mystery disease that killed 23 Asiatic lions at Gir

Canine distemper virus has killed 23 Asiatic lions in Gujarat. Canine distemper is a virus that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems. Gir lions are infected by Canine distemper virus when they prey on dogs, possibly wild dogs. There is no cure yet for Canine distemper virus. In Tanzania in 1994, 30% of the African lions died from an outbreak of distemper virus. In 2013, the Supreme Court has ordered to transfer a few Gir lions to MP but that has not happened yet.
