Maharashtra: Authorities found bodies of monkeys, pigeons buried, 8 detained

The Maharashtra Forest department detained seven persons on Saturday after they unearthed monkeys and pigeons buried in the premises of an oil marketing firm in Raigad district.

Mumbai: In a shocking case reported from Raigad district, the Maharashtra Forest department detained eight persons on Saturday. The authorities unearthed monkeys and pigeons buried in the premises of an oil marketing firm in Raigad district.

According to report by the news agency PTI, acting on a tip-off, a Forest department team reached the premises of BPCL in Panvel's Posri area. The Chief Conservator of Forests S R Kadam told the agency that on arrival they exhumed the bodies of 31 monkeys and 14 pigeons.

Meanwhile, he further added that the post-mortem was conducted by a veterinary doctor in Panvel and some body parts had been sent to the Haffkine Institute- a premier biomedical research facility, in Mumbai. The Rasayani police station inspector Ashok Jagdale told the agency that a case had been registered under the Wildlife Protection Act.

During the investigation, the police officials have detained eight persons in this regard. Reportedly, out of which seven were attached to BPCL while one was an excavator driver. However, further investigation in the case is underway.
