An elementary school in Aurora has been shut down by widespread influenza.

The Village East Elementary School, 1433 S. Oakland St., part of the Cherry Creek School District, will be closed Friday, Principal John Cramer said.

Stomach-related illnesses, flu and flu-like illness hit students and staff members hard, leading to the closure.

All before- and after-school activities have been canceled Friday.

“These illnesses are highly contagious, and even though extra efforts have been made to clean the school, risk of illness and spread of illness still exists,” Cramer said.

The school district and Tri-County Health Department worked together on the issue, and the decision to cancel was made from “an abundance of caution and concern.”

Winter-break programming will run as scheduled.
