New Delhi: According to research and reports, a proper sleep of at least 8 hours is a need of the body, although it can vary between 7 to 9, according to age, gender and general health. Many people do not realise the importance of this and over-exert their bodies so much so that they may fall sick due to extreme fatigue. Some people may sleep for the prescribed hours, but may not get good, sound sleep due to disturbance. According to a study, one out of every three people suffers from poor sleep and stress.

Though it is okay if it happens rarely, if it happens very frequently, it can have both short-term, and long-term health risks and unacceptable social behaviours -- as sleep deprivation can lead to an irritable, grumpy mood. Sleep deprivation and heart diseases

According to a review published in European Heart Journal in 2011, it was found that short sleepers had a 48% increased risk of developing or dying from coronary heart disease, and also a 15% greater risk of developing or dying from a stroke. It is therefore recommended to reduce stress levels by practising meditation or yoga and get sound and proper sleep to avoid heart diseases and disorders.

Diabetes

Another one of the most common diseases that can occur due to improper sleep among many other reasons is diabetes. It is believed that the body's reaction to sleep loss can be insulin resistance, which is the primary reason for diabetes. Also, since the body does not get proper rest, its urge to consume sugar may increase to balance the source of energy required through the day.

Depression and Anxiety

Not just serious physical health risks, improper or not getting enough sleep can also put you under the threat of major mental health problems like depression and anxiety. Improper sleep can lead to a cycle of depression caused due to it, and the inability to sleep due to depression. It is recommended that you bring this up to your doctor if you feel unable to sleep without any specific reason so the problem can be nipped in the bud. Obesity

Sleep deprivation makes you likely to eat more because you need to find another energy source for your body. This can lead to an unintended weight gain and can cause obesity. It is recommended that you rest your body properly so that you can follow a good, balanced diet to refrain from over-eating.

Weak immunity

When your immunity is low or impaired, it can lead to many infections and diseases. Too little sleep can also lead to weakened immunity and defence against viruses that can cause common infections. You are more likely to get sick if you have weak immunity and the infections can further become more problematic, if not handled in the initial stages.
