66 Polio Cases Reported From Karachi During 2008 To 2018

Karachi Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani on Wednesday was informed in a meeting that 66 polio cases were reported during the period from 2008-18, out of which 22 polio cases were reported from the Gadap Town, while 12 cases from Union Council Gujro, which is the highest among all union councils of the city. Presently there is only one case of polio in the metropolis which belonged to the union council.
Presiding over a first meeting of Gujro Union Council Anti-polio Task Force, the commissioner stressed the need for working with close coordination and make all out efforts on priority basis for the
eradication of polio virus from the said union council.
The Gujro Union Council Anti-polio Task Force was formed after the concerns expressed by the international and national experts on polio eradication over failure to counter polio virus in the vicinity
of Gujro union council with the Commissioner Karachi as its chairman and the representatives of WHO, Unicef, Bill Gates & Millenda Foundation, Rotary, and officials of Health department, the EPI, Water
and Sewerage board, Deputy Commissioner East, Assistant Commissioner Gujro as its members.
Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani said that polio eradication was a national cause and it will be the top priority of the government to carry out its efforts for the elimination of polio virus from the city.
Commissioner Karachi expressed the hoped that the members of the task force would play their due role and would make extra ordinary efforts for the eradication of polio in high risk union councils on priority basis.
The meeting among others was also attended by the Provincial Coordinator for the Emergency Operation Centre Sindh, Umar Farooq Bullo, Deputy Commissioner East Ali Ahmed Siddiqui, Coordinator Gujro Polio Task Force Shujaat Hussain, Coordinator Commissioner Karachi Task force Dr Nusrat Ali, officials of Police, Pakistan Rangers, representatives of WHO, Unicef, Bill Gates Foundation and Rotary.
