First adult death due to influenza reported
The first adult death due to influenza was reported Wednesday from the Douglas County Health Department.
The number of reported cases of influenza in Douglas County significantly increased last week.
Two influenza outbreaks have been reported in long-term care facilities.
Six states are currently reporting widespread flu activity and 37 states are now reporting regional or local flu activity.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported seven flu-associated pediatric deaths for the 2018-19 season (zero reported in Nebraska).
Flu activity continues to increase in Douglas County, with a total of 145 influenza cases reported last week compared to 57 reported the week prior.
The percentage of outpatient visits with influenza-like illness and the emergency department visits also increased last week.
A total of 247 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza have been reported since Sept. 30.
DCHD has not received any reports of pediatric deaths due to influenza this season. The first adult -- over 65 years of age -- influenza-related death in Douglas County was reported last week.
