NEW YORK (CBS NEWS) – College students are at three times the risk for catching one of the most common strains of meningococcal disease. The illness is spread through close contact and the exchange of saliva and while the incidence is low, it can be severe and deadly. A study in “Pediatrics” says students planning to live in dorms should consider getting the meningococcal vaccine.

For older adults with heart failure, it may be okay to have a glass of wine with dinner. A new study from Washington University tracked patients over 65 with newly diagnosed heart failure. Those who had up to seven alcoholic drinks a week survived a year longer than those who stopped drinking altogether.

And the opioid epidemic is taking a toll on the youngest Americans. The CDC says nearly 9,000 children and teenagers died from prescription and illegal opioids over an 18 year period, with the death rate nearly tripling during that time. Teenagers were hardest hit, with heroin killing nearly 1,900.
