Now this map shows the 4 public health regions in the state showing there's been an increase in flu-related illnesses in the midlands and low country.

Dr. James Koon, family practice physician for urgent care says, "With the large numbers and it being similar to what it was last year in terms of the flu...it raises the importance of more people getting the flu vaccine."

The physician goes on to mention, "Things to do on a daily basis to help prevent the flu are wash your hands frequently, covering your mouth when coughing, getting plenty of rest, and drinking plenty of fluids. If you think you have the flu, seeing someone really early on the first day or so to asses the matter and get the best treatment for you."

Health experts say people with the flu are most contagious in the first 3 to 4 days after their illness begins. Those with the highest risk of catching the flu are those 65 and older and children under five years old.
