A Cottingham hotel has been investigated after an outbreak of food poisoning.

Lazaat Hotel and Restaurant in Wood Hill Way was probed by experts from Public Health England who looked into an outbreak of campylobacter – a bacteria usually found on raw or uncooked meat, unpasteurised milk and untreated water.

The outbreak of the bacteria is linked to an event at Lazaat in 2018 with and there have been three confirmed cases of people being suffering food poisoning. They fell ill on December 1.

Although the risk to public health was considered low, Public Health England worked with East Riding Council to investigate the outbreak.

Dr Nicholas Aigbogun, a consultant in communicable disease control with Public Health England Yorkshire & the Humber, said: “We have worked with East Riding of Yorkshire Council to investigate and advise the premises concerned. The public health risk to others is low.”

Campylobacter is the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK. Those who are infected by it often have diarrhoea, fever and abdominal cramps, with nausea and vomiting also included in the list of symptoms.

According to the Food Standards Agency, the majority of people who get ill from campylobacter recover fully and quickly but it can cause long-term and severe health problems in some.

Children under five and older people are considered the most at risk from campylobacter because they may have weaker immune systems.

Lazaat has been contacted for a comment in relation to the outbreak.
