HYDERABAD: With sudden dip in temperature at the beginning of the year, 83 cases of swine flu have been recorded in 10 days from across the state.
Apart from rise in swine flu cases, the number of flu cases being reported in hospitals across the city have also seen a huge jump. The number of daily out-patients at state-run fever hospital is touching 1,000 as against an average of 500-600 per day.
On Wednesday, five new cases and on Thursday, 10 new cases were reported.
Authorities attribute the sudden rise in cases to dip in temperature. The temperature has fluctuated by 5-6 degree Celsius within 24-48 hours, twice during the last fortnight alone. With minimum temperatures swinging between 10.9 degree Celsius and 16 degree Celsius, it has been a conducive atmosphere for viruses to thrive.
Also the number of samples coming in for swine flu tests have gone up to 200 per day and the testing centres are running in three shifts round-the-clock to complete the task at hand. “We have tested 483 samples between January 1 and January 10, of which 83 were positive. We are seeing a spike in cases across the city. In fact, lot of samples are coming from private hospitals,” said Dr K Shankar, director Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) and superintendent at Fever hospital.
As per experts, the numbers are expected to rise further during this month as the virus activity is currently at a high. “We are expecting the swine flu activity to come down in the month of February. This is the peak swine flu season and more activity is usually noticed between the months of November and January,” Shankar added.
