Firefighters tackled 154 chimney blazes in the last nine months, according to Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service. Fire chiefs said more open fires and wood-burning stoves were being used due to the cold weather.

There were plans for a £55,000 multi-use games area on a patch of land in Lund Terrace, Ulverston.

A semi-detached house in Morton Close, Barrow. was offered for sale at £154,995. A terraced house at Douglas Street, Walney Island, was £155,000.

A flu bug sweeping through Furness helped to push South Cumbria Health Authority into the red, by £66,500 in November.

Ambitious plans were to be unveiled in Grange for shopping, industrial and housing developments. South Lakeland District Council wanted to work with builders on land at Hampsfell Road.

A terraced house at Porter Street, Dalton, was offered for sale at £38,000. A first floor flat in Earle Street, Barrow, was £22,000.

Barrow maths teacher Anne Plant won a bronze medal in the National Championships 100-mile time trial.

Textile firm Cobblestones was looking for trainee lockstitchers and overlockers at its base in North Lonsdale Road, Ulverston.

A group of enthusiasts bought an Avondale saddle tank steam locomotive from the Millom site of the former Hodbarrow iron ore mines with the intention of preserving it.
