LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the first case of rabies in 2019 in the county on Friday.

According to the sheriff’s office, on Jan. 23, a woman visiting a home on Hammockview Drive in Lakeland noticed a donkey with an animal in its mouth.

When the woman went back outside with the homeowner, they discovered the animal was a dead raccoon, so they contacted Animal Control.

The raccoon was collected and sent for rabies testing. It was confirmed on Friday the raccoon had rabies.

Both of the homeowner’s donkeys were placed in six months quarantine.
