The Clarke County Health Department released an alert Friday that a rabid skunk was killed in the Five Points neighborhood of Athens.

The skunk had attacked a dog on Wednesday and was killed by a person at the home and taken to a lab, where the animal was determined rabid, a spokeswoman for the health department said.

The health department has asked that people make sure their cats, dogs and ferrets are current on rabies vaccinations and avoid any animals exhibiting behavior such as aggression, lack of fear of people and appearing in odd times of the day.

Any bites should be reported to the health department, located at 345 N. Harris St., Athens, by calling (706) 389-6921.
