Equine Strangles in Pierce County, Washington

Shortly after announcing a positive case of equine strangles in Stevens County, Washington, the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported two cases of strangles in Pierce County, Washington.

The attending veterinarian of the most recent cases reported that two horses were affected. The first was a 10-year-old Paint mare that had onset of clinical signs on January 13 including mucopurulent discharge and fever. That horse was confirmed positive for strangles and is recovering. The second horse was a Quarter Horse mare that had onset of clinical signs on January 14 that included fever and nasal discharge. That mare is suspect of having strangles and is recovering.

February 7 Update

The EDCC received notice that two additional cases of strangles had been confirmed in Pierce County.
