CDC: Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Pet Hedgehogs

A multistate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infections has been linked to contact with pet hedgehogs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  

So far 11 people have been infected across 8 states (CO, ME, MN, MS, MO, NE, TX, WY) with 1 person hospitalized; no deaths have been reported. Whole genome sequencing performed on Salmonella bacteria from ill patients showed that the cases were closely related genetically. The outbreak strain has been found in samples collected from 3 hedgehogs in 2 of the patients’ homes.

As a common hedgehog supplier has not yet been identified, the CDC is reminding pet owners to take proper precautions when handling these animals. “Regardless of where hedgehogs are purchased, these animals can carry Salmonella germs that can make people sick,” the Agency stated.
