On 3rd January 2019, one dengue case was detected in Port Vila by Rapid Diagnosis Test (RDT) (NS1+)

It was in a traveler who has visited Solomon Islands and was infected before arriving in Vanuatu (Imported Case).

Containment measures were implemented, and the Health authorities in Solomon Islands were notified.

A blood sample was sent to Institute Pasteur and on 30th of January 2019 it was confirmed to be a DENV-2 infection. This serotype has been circulating in Vanuatu for the last 2 years.

On 18th January 2019, 2 cases were reported from Northern Provincial Hospital on Santo Island in residents with no travel history (locally transmitted).

Case definition: Fever for at least 2 days PLUS two or more of the following;
- Nausea or Vomiting
- Muscle or Joint pain
- Severe Headache or pain behind the eyes
- Rash
- Spontaneous bleeding
