Dengue Overview in Vanuatu - Situational Report 1 (Report Date: 01/02/2019 | for surveillance activity on 01st to 31st January 2019)

Overview

  • On 3rd January 2019, one dengue case was detected in Port Vila by Rapid Diagnosis Test (RDT) (NS1+)

  • It was in a traveler who has visited Solomon Islands and was infected before arriving in Vanuatu (Imported Case).

  • Containment measures were implemented, and the Health authorities in Solomon Islands were notified.

  • A blood sample was sent to Institute Pasteur and on 30th of January 2019 it was confirmed to be a DENV-2 infection. This serotype has been circulating in Vanuatu for the last 2 years.

  • On 18th January 2019, 2 cases were reported from Northern Provincial Hospital on Santo Island in residents with no travel history (locally transmitted).

  • Case definition: Fever for at least 2 days PLUS two or more of the following;

    • Nausea or Vomiting
    • Muscle or Joint pain
    • Severe Headache or pain behind the eyes
    • Rash
    • Spontaneous bleeding
