Figures from the Alabama Department of Public Health show that flu activity in the state is up nearly 6 percent in the last three weeks.One flu-related pediatric death was reported from Jan. 20-26. No information on where the child lived or its age was available.The department's data shows activity as widespread throughout much of Alabama, including the north part of the state. Jefferson County has seen the biggest increase in flu cases, up more than 7 percent in the last week. Several Alabama school systems have also closed this week due to flu outbreaks.The department is urging people to do several things to avoid getting the flu, including getting the vaccine, washing your hands and staying at home if you have a fever.
