Officials are unsure what caused several students to feel ill on Friday at a Mesa school after ingesting candy provided by another student.

The incident occurred at Eisenhower Center for Innovation, a Mesa Public Schools elementary school.

The Mesa Fire and Medical Department said initial reports said 15 children were sickened at the school, but officials later determined that only eight had symptoms.

The eight students were evaluated after feeling symptoms such as nausea, dizziness and headaches.

"Basically, a student shared candy with a few other students who then had various symptoms ranging from nausea to dizziness," said Mesa police Detective Nik Rasheta.

Officials say seven of the students were released to their parents, while an 11-year-old girl was transported to a hospital for further evaluation.

Police tested Pixy Stix candy at the scene and determined that no drugs were present.

Fire officials said it is unknown what caused the symptoms.
