Animal quarantine imposed in Siaya over foot and mouth disease outbreak

An animal quarantine has been imposed in parts of Siaya County following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Rarieda sub-county.

According to the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Charles Ogada, the ban on animal movement has been imposed in Gem, Rarieda and Bondo sub-counties.

Speaking during a farmers’ field day at Avepo Smart Farm on the outskirts of Siaya town, Mr. Ogada stated that laboratory tests have confirmed an outbreak of the disease in East Uyoma location.

He added that this informed their decision to close the livestock trade at Aram market in Rarieda sub-county, Akala market in Gem sub-county and Bondo market in Bondo sub-county in an effort to contain the disease.

Mr. Ogada disclosed that they are already planning for a massive vaccination in Uyoma where the outbreak was discovered beginning next week.

“The disease has also been reported in Kisumu County and they have also closed Riat market which is bordering Akala market (in Siaya County),” stated the CEC.

He urged livestock farmers in other parts of the county to be vigilant and to promptly report to the department of agriculture any symptoms of foot and mouth disease within their areas.
