Four more monkeys found dead in Udupi district

One of them has tested positive for KFD virus

Four more monkeys were found dead in different parts of Udupi district on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health and Family Welfare has started administering vaccine against Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) in parts of the district. As many as 274 persons have been vaccinated in parts of the district in the last two days.

Prashanth Bhat, District Nodal Officer for KFD, told The Hindu on Wednesday that two monkeys were found dead in Hebri and one each in Byndoor and Ajekar. Autopsies were conducted on two dead monkeys, and one of them has tested positive for KFD virus.

Vaccination

Rohini, District Health and Family Welfare Officer, told said the Health Department had started vaccinating people against KFD in parts of the district. It has vaccinated 224 persons, including 33 members of the Anti-Naxalite Force (ANF), 130 field staff of Forest Department, 51 staff of Health Department and 10 staff members of the Veterinary Department in Kundapur taluk on January 29. The Health Department had vaccinated 21 staff members of Forest Department and 29 staff members of Health Department at Hirgana in Karkala taluk on Wednesday, she said. The results of 11 persons, who were tested in Udupi for KFD since January 8, were negative. There has been no positive case of KFD among humans in Udupi district so far, Dr. Rohini said.
