The Amarillo Fire Department is cancelling all public education events at local schools and pre-schools until further notice due to the recent flu outbreak in the area.

According to a press release from AFD, the department places a high value on public education and interaction with school-age children and the department says it devotes a large portion of time visiting schools for educational activities, events and presentations. AFD adds that each year it interacts with tens of thousands of children while providing lessons on fire prevention and safety.

Additionally, AFD says it works to build trusting relationships with each and every one of the children they interact with.

Fire station tours and and visits from local schools will be among the events postponed until further notice. AFD says the cancellations are AFD's way of doing their part to curb the spread of sickness.

The department will issue another press release once normal operations resume and says it will be happy to reschedule any affected activities for a later date.
