A patient tested for Ebola virus at a Philadelphia hospital turned out not to have the disease, the state Health Department reported.
An initial statement issued by Penn Medicine’s chief medical officer, Dr. P.J. Brennan, said the test was administered “in an abundance of caution.” Doctors at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania were unsure if the patient had traveled to a location which has the disease, or came in contact with someone who does.
The official Twitter account of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, in Africa, called the Ebola outbreak there the largest ever in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The World Health Organization said the outbreak is occurring amid polio, cholera, measles and monkeypox outbreaks and other humanitarian crises. A tweet called it, “a huge reminder of the immense pressure on health systems regionally & need to eradicate weakness in systems to rapidly detect, respond & end outbreaks.”
Despite widespread attention to its outbreaks, the deadly Ebola virus, so named for its discovery near the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976, is rare.
People and primates are susceptible to the virus, which scientists believe was originally animal-borne. It spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, or it can penetrate broken skin — say, an animal bite — or membranes in the nose, eyes and mouth.
The disease is characterized by fever, black stools, vomiting and severe dehydration, unexplained hemorrhage, as well as high death rates.
During the West African Ebola epidemic from 2014 to 2016 — the largest outbreak in history — about 40 percent of the 28,600 people who contracted the disease died. A separate but unrelated outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2014 had far fewer cases, but a death rate of about 70 percent.
Most of the outbreaks occur in African countries. Eleven people were treated for Ebola in the United States during the West African Ebola outbreak, and two died, but most were infected outside the U.S.
