PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The principal of Haverford Middle School in Delaware County sent an email to parents, warning them that students may have been exposed to a case of pertussis, which is more commonly known as whooping cough.

Whooping cough is highly contagious, and quickly spreads by coughing or sneezing.

The symptoms are usually similar to that of a common cold, but steadly get worse over the course of a week or two.

Parents are urged to take their child to the doctor if they have any cold symptoms to make sure it is just a cold.

They also say anyone with questions can contact the school nurse, their doctor or the state department of health.
