Gujarat third highest in H1N1 cases in India

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat has reported the third highest number of swine flu cases and the second highest of deaths in the country till February 10 this year. Gujarat has reported 1,431 swine flu cases and 55 deaths in 46 days. Most of these cases have been registered at public hospitals or public health centres. The actual swine flu numbers could be several times more, with countless cases of swine flu being attributed to a passing flu.

The worst affected states this year include Rajasthan, which has registered 2,941 cases and 107 deaths, followed by the Gujarat (1,431 cases, 55 deaths) then Punjab (335 cases, 30 deaths). Delhi registered 1,669 cases and 7 deaths, while MP and Maharashtra have registered 98 and 204 cases, respectively. In all, according to the Union health ministry, since the beginning of the year, the country has reported 9,367 swine flu cases and 312 deaths.
The swine flu virus attacks the victim’s respiratory system. Though in the majority of cases the infection is cured with the oseltamivir drug at early stages. However, if the condition of the victim declines and the patient develops a severe lung infection or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), the patient is given oxygen support. A further decline in will require ventilator support.
