Mould, salmonella and undeclared allergens have all sparked recalls of food products over the past week.

The Condiment Company has recalled a batch of its Hunter & Gather Avocado Oil Mayonnaise, after a recipe error meant the product could contain mould and be contaminated with salmonella.

Packs of the product with the best-before date of 25 September 2019 were included in the recall, bearing the batch description 25/09/19. The product was available in 250g packs.

Customers who bought the affected product were advised to return it to the store where it was purchased to receive a full refund.

Contamination by bacteria also forced the recall of a range of cheese products in Northern Ireland last week.

Raw cows’ milk

Corleggy Cheese recalled its Cavanbert and Drumlin raw cow’s milk cheeses because they were made from milk from a herd in which animals tested positive for Mycobacterium bovis.

Mycobacterium bovis causes tuberculosis (TB) in cattle and consumption of contaminated dairy products can also cause human TB – although such infections are rare, according to the Food Standards Agency.

The recall applied to all pack sizes of the two cheeses, with the best-before dates for Cavanbert and Drumlin of up to 14/02/19 and 13/03/19 respectively.

Consumers were advised not to eat the cheeses and instead return them to the store they were bought from to receive a full refund. If unwell after eating the products, consumers should contact a doctor.

Undeclared allergens

Undeclared allergens were the cause of a number of food product recalls last week.

The presence of milk that was not correctly declared on the label of Speedibake’s Takeaway 10 Garlic Slices saw the product removed from shelves. The presence of the ingredient meant it posed a possible health risk to consumers with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.

Meanwhile, Lidl has recalled its Mister Choc Choco & Caramel Bars, 6 Pack because some bars were packed in incorrect packaging.

Some packets labelled as Choco & Caramel bars may contain Caramel Peanut Bars, which contain peanuts that were not mentioned on the label. To see full details of the recalls, see the box below.
