A boil water advisory is canceled for the Battle Creek water system. Governor Whitmer submits a new order to restructure the DEQ. WMU will have five Saturday home football games this season.

The city of Battle Creek has canceled a boil water advisory for all customers of its water system. People in Battle Creek and surrounding areas that use the city’s water were told on Tuesday to boil water before using it after an accident near the Verona pumping station. Battle Creek officials say that caused a drop in water pressure, but the boil water advisory was canceled Wednesday afternoon because there is no bacteria present in the city’s water system.

(MPRN) Governor Gretchen Whitmer is trying again to restructure the state Department of Environmental Quality. Whitmer signed a new executive order Wednesday. This comes after Republicans in the Legislature overturned a previous order that got rid of several oversight panels they created last year. The new order keeps two of the business-friendly panels on environmental rules and permits but gets rid of the third panel. A spokesman for Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield says Chatfield is glad Whitmer reached out to work with the Legislature on the issue.

(MPRN) The Michigan Supreme Court could weigh in on whether it was okay for the Legislature to adopt and then quickly amend two ballot initiatives last year. Last year the Legislature adopted and then changed ballot measures to increase the minimum wage and require earned sick time. Attorney General Dana Nessel is also considering a request for a formal opinion on the issue.

(MPRN) A bipartisan group of state lawmakers wants to change how Michigan deals with minors accused of crimes. A package of bills has been introduced by Republicans and Democrats. They would place 17-year-old defendants in the juvenile justice system rather than automatically charging them as adults. Michigan is among a handful of states that allow minors to be charged as adults for non-violent offenses.

Western Michigan University has released its football schedule for the upcoming season. The Broncos will play five Saturday home games, including September 28th against rival Central Michigan. There is one Tuesday night game at home in November against Ball State. Western opens the football season on Saturday August 31st against Monmouth in Waldo Stadium. The annual CommUniverCity game is two weeks later against Georgia State.

In women’s basketball, Western Michigan lost to Kent State Wednesday night 56-52. Deja Wimbey led the Broncos with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Western is now 8-16 overall with two wins and 11 losses in Mid-American Conference play. The Broncos will host Eastern Michigan Saturday afternoon.

In hockey, Kalamazoo fell behind 3-0 in the first period andlost at Cincinnati Wednesday night 5-1. The K-Wings play their fourth straight road game Saturday night at Kansas City.
