Supermarkets must be ‘diligent’ with food safety says expert

Sainsbury’s and Lidl customers should be aware of an allergy alert released by the Food Standards Agency this week. The supermarket giants have issued a recall on a variety of products, due to undeclared milk. Sainsbury’s issued its recall for Mango Sorbet by Sainsbury’s on Wednesday. They cited the reason being because it contains traces of milk, which is not mentioned on the label.

This could mean it results in a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.

All of the 500ml packs of the product, which have the best before date November 2019, are being recalled.

The Food Standards Agency advise that anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents should not eat the aforementioned product.

They can return it to the store from where it was bought, and receive a full refund.

Yesterday, Lidl recalled some of its products.

These are the Sondey Orange Jaffa Cakes and Sondey Jaffa Minis, (Orange Assortment).

A notice released by the Food Standards Agency explains that this is because the items contain milk - but it is not mentioned on the label.

The affected products are the 300g packs of Sondey Orange Jaffa Cakes with the following best before dates.

  • January 1 2019
  • February 1 2019
  • March 1 2019
  • April 1 2019
  • May 1 2019
  • June 1 2019
  • July 1 2019
  • August 1 2019

The 125g portions of Sondey Jaffa Minis (Orange Assortment), with best before dates of July 1 2019, August 1 2019, and November 1 2019, are also being recalled.

Instead, they should request a full refund from the store in which they bought it.

No other Lidl or Sainsbury’s products are known the be affected.

This came after Listeria monocytogenes was found in one batch of the cheese.
